1. The Lighting Is Bright, But Not Effective
Most people assume that "more light is better." While it’s true that a dim staircase is a hazard, overhead lighting can actually create its own set of problems. Standard ceiling fixtures often cast long shadows, especially if the light source is behind the person walking down. These shadows can obscure the edge of the tread (the flat part of the step), making it nearly impossible to judge where to place the foot.
Furthermore, glare can be just as dangerous as darkness. Highly polished wood or tile stairs can reflect overhead light in a way that "washes out" the definition of the steps, creating a flat visual field where the individual steps disappear.
