If a staircase has even a quarter-inch difference in height between one step and the next, that rhythm is broken. Your foot expects the floor to be in one place, but it isn't there. This is a primary cause of trips.

How to Fix It:
If you live in an older home, use a tape measure to check the "rise" (height) of every single step. If you find inconsistencies, you might need a carpenter to shim or adjust the treads.
